The Gallatin River is a freestone stream with fantastic diversity that will please all anglers. Shortly outside of Bozeman the Gallatin flows 120 miles and is one of the Three Forks that forms the “Mighty Missouri.” Blue Ribbon trout fishing can be found here with healthy populations of Browns & Rainbows. The River originates in Yellowstone Park winding through high elevation meadows, then creates pocket water as it flows through the boulder filled Gallatin Canyon, and then flowing out into the mild fields of the Gallatin Valley.

Waded down river from cameron on friday and down river from sheds on saturday. Lots of action on the surface!! #10 yellow morrish and any #16 BWO variation was the ticket. Moved over 60 fish both days and brought at least 25 to 30 to hand on both days. The fish were ranging in size from 8 inches to 18 inches. The browns seem to be especially active right now. At least 85 percent of the fish landed were very aggresive browns. I’d say that the best fly was either a grey or lime bodied trude or a yellowish adams (no parachute)

Lots of pressure on the Gallatin today. Mostly non-residents. There was a car/truck at almost every turnout from Gateway past Big Sky. Most pressure I have seen in a while. Don’t know where it came from?

We got on the river about noon and floated until about seven. We had steady action on the surface for most of the day. Most of the action we had were smaller fish-so we kept changing up to try and draw the big boys. The flys we had the most action on were #10 yellow, tan, and pink morrish hoppers, #14 para adams, #14 trude-gray body, #12 gray drake (lots of drakes on the water), a few other hopper/attractor patterns and we caught a few on a small black foam beetle. The boat landed about 30 fish (we landed only about 40 percent of the strikes)-mostly ranging from 8-12 inches. The biggest was a fat 16 inch rainbow full of spunk.

There is a lot of harvesting & haying being done near Gateway right now and it is making the hopper fishing light up.
