Gallatin River Fly Fishing Report

The Gallatin River is a freestone stream with fantastic diversity that will please all anglers. Shortly outside of Bozeman the Gallatin flows 120 miles and is one of the Three Forks that forms the “Mighty Missouri.” Blue Ribbon trout fishing can be found here with healthy populations of Browns & Rainbows. The River originates in Yellowstone Park winding through high elevation meadows, then creates pocket water as it flows through the boulder filled Gallatin Canyon, and then flowing out into the mild fields of the Gallatin Valley.

  1. Lenny Erbes says: Best Fly: tan/pink #10 morrish
Water Conditions: 950CFS Clear and beautiful
    Weather Conditions: full sun
    Floated or Waded: waded
Section of Water Fished: Gateway -west bridge

I fished from about 10AM to 3PM. It was all hopper action! I started with a morrish hopper and an adams dropper. The fish only had eyes for the hopper so I switched to a hopper with a hopper dropper. I had at least fifty hits, lots of 14-17 inch fish taking a serious look but slow to take (a little live action seemed to help). I was finding the fish in choppy riffles 18 inches to 3 feet deep- mostly next to deeper holes/runs that they could retreat to.

I went back out again around 7PM up river from four corners and had a lot of action on a high vis parachute adams (#14 olive body), however most of the fish interested were dinks (7-11 inches) but still lots of fun.

  3. Tony says: Best Fly: Mega Prince: 5
    Water Conditions: High and Cloudy
    Weather Conditions: Hot turned Cool
    Floated or Waded: waded
Section of Water Fished: Above House Rock

Stopped on my way back from work tonight and tossed a few before I got rained out. The water is still flowing high and fast but I hit a spots with minimal luck. I tried a few bugs but the Mega Prince seemed to fish have the most action. I heard that there are a few Salmonflies out from the Troutfitters site but never saw any.
