Hyalite Reservoir is a popular location when other waterways are not fishable. Holding 8,000 acre feet of water, Hyalite Reservoir is the source for Bozeman’s drinking water and some of the Gallatin Valley irrigation water. Like most fish living in reservoirs the fish generally eat things like scuds, leeches, and imitations of the mayflies and caddis that come off during the summer. Located just south of Bozeman in Hyalite Canyon the reservoir to a great place to head afterwork or for a quick fly fishing trip.
Best Fly: Small dries
Water Conditions: good
Weather Conditions: cool evenings
Floated or Waded: floated
Section of Water Fished: south inlet
Hit the south inlet in the eveing and you will not be disapointed. I have been up there twice this week and have caught quite a few fish in just an hour or so. The south inlet is the best spot. Throw some small dries out there and watch for a hit.

We caught alot of fish in the evening, not so much through the middle of the day. Dry fly (bwo) action got better as the evening progressed. There is a good bit of algea starting to sprout up so be aware of that. Also caught a couple fish on leaches.
