Missouri River Fly Fishing Report

The Missouri River is born near the aptly named town of Three Forks, MT where the Madison, Jefferson and Gallatin Rivers converge.  From Three Forks the Missouri flows over 700 miles across the state, through a variety of terrain.  From its beginnings the Missouri is big and broad.  Along its path are a variety of dams and reservoirs.  Throughout its journey there are many access sites to get on the river.

Paul, give it a month and the dry fly-fishing on the MO’ is going to off the charts. Last September and October were unreal and the water looks even better this year.

  2. Paul Russo Reported:

    Best Fly: Parachute Frankenhopper Tan
    Water Conditions: Good for August
    Weather Conditions: Chilly for August
    Floated or Waded: floated
Section of Water Fished: Bridge to Mid Canyon

Dry fly fishing is slow, if you are a purist, head to Belt Creek or go fish the PMD’s in Yellowstone park. Nymph fishing is good with small midge larvae right now. I stayed in Craig, MT on Tuesday night and ended up fishing Hoppers out of the boat because I couldn’t find any pods up. We did alright, but nothing incredible.
