Yellowstone River – Upper Fly Fishing Report

The Mighty Yellowstone is a large powerful river that originates in the heart of Yellowstone National Park. We define the Upper Section as the stretch between Gardiner, MT and Springdale, MT. Browns and Rainbows can be found throughout this section, and the vibrant Yellowstone Cutthroat is prominent on the upper parts. This river can please all angler styles: you can throw big fluffy dry flies up underneath cutbanks, or you can throw streamers for big aggressive brown trout. Consistent Hatches keep these trout healthy and heavy. The Caddis Hatch in May and the Salmon Fly Hatch in July are not to be missed. The towns of Gardiner and Livingston carry all the supplies you need with plenty of lodging in the area.

Best Fly: Helter Kelter Tan Hopper #8
    Water Conditions: Good, but Mossy
    Weather Conditions: Cloudy Weather=Big Fish
    Floated or Waded: floated
    Section of Water Fished: Mayors-Sheep

Streamer fishing has been excellent on the cloudy rainy moments. Keep a streamer rod ready to throw at all times. In the sun, throw a #8 hopper to the bank. Try a sunk hopper dropper.

  2. Jim Houvler Reported:

    Best Fly: Hopper
    Water Conditions: Great color
    Weather Conditions: sunny warm
    Floated or Waded: floated
    Section of Water Fished: Low

Fish have been on and off on the lower for the past few days. We hit them hard yesterday with hoppers in the pm. The larger brown were nailing the hoppers, and we droped a parachute adams off the back for the smaller guys and to increase our numbers. Fish are getting spooky, I was fishing a 4x and that seemed to be doing the trick.

  3. Paul Reported:

    Best Fly: Sunk Small Hopper
    Water Conditions: Perfect
    Weather Conditions: Hot & Breeezy
    Floated or Waded: floated
Section of Water Fished: Springdale to Grey Bear

Pink Morish Hopper with a sunk Daves Hopper 20″ off the back has been the best rig ever this week. Sink your Dave’s with a little #4 split shot. Fish the fast water.

  4. Trudi Lawson Reported:

    Best Fly: Hoppers
Water Conditions: beautiful... nice and green
    Weather Conditions: sunny
    Floated or Waded: floated
    Section of Water Fished:

Hoppers all around. Hoppers were hot starting around noon. Caddis were out around 2 or 3. Pick your poision for the afternoon then move towards caddis toward the late pm. Size 14 elk hair was my honey hole. Crazy good water and the fish are active.

  5. Nick English Reported:

    Best Fly: Hoppers
    Water Conditions: 5000, clear
    Weather Conditions: Sunny, partly cloudy
    Floated or Waded: floated
Section of Water Fished: Bird Float, 350-Grey Bear

Was on Stone the last 3 days, fished Grey Owl to Pine 2 days ago, rubber leg/flashy nymphs in morning, switching to Hopper/dropper in afternoon worked out well. Yesterday 350- Grey Bear, threw hoppers all afternoon and got eats all afternoon, fishing picked up in evening about 8 oclock, fish on banks, in current seams, deep drops, kinda all spread out. Look for moving water for most productive areas. Morrish hoppers, chubbies, club sandwiches, the usual.
