The Mighty Yellowstone is a large powerful river that originates in the heart of Yellowstone National Park. We define the Upper Section as the stretch between Gardiner, MT and Springdale, MT. Browns and Rainbows can be found throughout this section, and the vibrant Yellowstone Cutthroat is prominent on the upper parts. This river can please all angler styles: you can throw big fluffy dry flies up underneath cutbanks, or you can throw streamers for big aggressive brown trout. Consistent Hatches keep these trout healthy and heavy. The Caddis Hatch in May and the Salmon Fly Hatch in July are not to be missed. The towns of Gardiner and Livingston carry all the supplies you need with plenty of lodging in the area.

Great fishing with large flashy bugs, rubber legs and flash is the ticket right now, not quite on the top bite today, too windy, but throw chubbies and hoppers on calm hot days. Nymphing with lots of weight to get down to the fish in the heavier water.
Water Conditions: Low & Clear
Weather Conditions: Rainy in the a.m, nice in the afternoon
Floated or Waded: floated
Section of Water Fished: Springdale to Otter Creek
The conditions for streamer fishing on Sunday looked perfect with the clouds but the streamer bite near Springdale was slow for our boat and a few other boats we spoke with. We fished dries for a few hours in the middle of the day and did alright with a #16 parachute adams.

The streamer fishing has been fine on the cloudy days. Strip hard!

Fished the 30th of August. Short float. Put in at 3:45 pm. No bugs in the air but lots of hoppers around. After no dry action switched to a nymph rig. Caught a good sized cut and a big brown on a red copper john in about 6 ft. of water. Several other small fish but not many. Switched gears a lot but no more action. Those two good fish made my day though. Would add a pic but can’t figure out how…
